    Bjørn Ransve (b. 1944)

    Norwegian

Bjørn Ransve is a Norwegian painter, draughtsman and printmaker born in Oslo in 1944. His work explores the expressive possibilities of the human figure, animals and imagined situations. A precise command of drawing often meets unexpected colour and unsettling transformations. Across different periods, he has questioned how bodies, spaces and pictorial conventions can create meaning without relying on a single, stable narrative.

    Biography

Bjørn Ransve trained at the National College of Art and Design and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. Drawing, painting and printmaking form distinct but related parts of his practice. His figurative work combines close attention to anatomy and form with situations that depart from everyday experience. Harlequins, isolated figures and fragments of the body appear in works from different stages of his career. Their impact comes partly from the friction between convincing description and an improbable or disquieting setting. Colour and the handling of the painted surface are active elements in this effect. His graphic work and drawings also provide space to investigate subjects pursued in painting. Ransve's work is represented in Norway's national collection, placing his exploration of figuration within the broader history of Norwegian post-war art.
