    Frans Widerberg (1934–2017)

    Norwegian

Frans Widerberg was a Norwegian painter and printmaker known for luminous colour and an imaginative figurative world. Born in Oslo in 1934, he developed recurring images of riders, horses and seemingly weightless human figures. His landscapes often operate as psychological or visionary spaces. The relationship between the isolated figure and an expansive setting gives his work a distinctive combination of energy, vulnerability and wonder.

    Biography

Frans Widerberg trained in Oslo, including studies at the National Academy of Fine Arts under Alexander Schultz. A period of study and travel in Italy brought him into close contact with Renaissance painting, adding another reference point to his development as a figurative artist. His pictures frequently depart from ordinary gravity and naturalistic space. Riders, animals and floating figures inhabit landscapes shaped by intense colour and light. Such images can suggest myth or dream, while retaining a direct emotional relationship to human experience. Printmaking was a sustained part of Widerberg's practice, alongside painting and drawing. Changes of technique offered different ways to construct the image through line, surface and colour. His work is represented in the Nasjonalmuseet collection and forms part of the history of Norwegian figuration in the later twentieth century.
