    Hermann Albert (b. 1937)

    German

Hermann Albert is a German painter born in Ansbach in 1937. His figurative work brings together human figures, still-life objects and landscapes in carefully arranged pictorial spaces. An enduring interest in Italy informs both his subjects and his treatment of colour. Monumental figures and simplified objects can give his paintings the stillness of a staged scene, while the paint surface preserves a tangible, worked quality.

    Biography

Hermann Albert studied painting in Braunschweig from 1958 to 1964 before working in West Berlin. A Villa Romana scholarship took him to Florence in 1971, strengthening his engagement with Italian art and landscape. His compositions often organise figures and everyday things into clear, weighty forms. Objects such as vessels and boxes can take on a presence comparable to that of the human figure. Rather than describing a passing moment, the image may appear carefully held in place, with references to classical or metaphysical painting. Albert participated in documenta 6 in 1977 and later held a professorship in Braunschweig. His work connects post-war German figuration with a sustained dialogue with Mediterranean settings and earlier European painting.
