    Jesper Neergaard (1939–2002)

    Danish

Jesper Neergaard is a Danish sculptor and writer born in Copenhagen in 1939. Working especially in marble and granite, he explores organic form, balance and movement. His background in literature and other academic subjects informs an interest in human relationships. Sculpture offers him a physical language for these concerns, ranging from works on an intimate scale to projects made for public spaces.

    Biography

Jesper Neergaard trained in literature at the University of Copenhagen after studies across several disciplines. He established his sculptural practice during the 1970s and developed an international career involving exhibitions and public commissions. Stone is a central material, particularly marble and granite, but he has also worked with bronze, wood and other media. His forms invite the viewer to consider weight and movement together: a sculpture can be firmly grounded while suggesting growth, flight or a relationship between interdependent parts. Writing remains a parallel activity. This combination of literary reflection and material practice is relevant to an art concerned with the individual and the wider human community. His public sculptures also make the surrounding site an active part of the encounter with the work.
