    Mimmo Paladino (b. 1948)

    Italian

Mimmo Paladino is an Italian painter, sculptor and printmaker associated with the Transavanguardia. Born in Paduli in 1948, he helped renew interest in figurative imagery and experimentation with materials around 1980. His practice extends across painting, sculpture, prints, books and architectural settings. Images can evoke fragments of older cultures while remaining deliberately open, bringing past and present into an unresolved conversation.

    Biography

Mimmo Paladino trained in southern Italy and began exhibiting in the late 1960s. His early development included conceptual approaches and experiments with different media before painting took a more prominent role. In 1980 he participated in Aperto at the Venice Biennale alongside artists associated with the Transavanguardia, including Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi. This context supported a renewed commitment to figurative imagery and to combining references from different periods. Paladino's work is not confined to a single medium. Prints, sculptures, installations and site-specific projects all allow an image to take on different material and spatial qualities. His work is held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate. An individual print should be approached as a particular construction of line, surface and image within this wider practice.
