    Peter Chevalier (b. 1953)

    German

Peter Chevalier is a German painter born in Karlsruhe in 1953. His work combines recognisable things with unexpected relationships of scale, setting and form. Associated with the renewed interest in expressive painting from the late twentieth century, he draws on both figurative and abstract approaches. Objects and figures can appear to belong to a dreamlike construction rather than to an ordinary, continuous space.

    Biography

Peter Chevalier studied at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig from 1976 to 1980, including under Hermann Albert, before moving to Berlin. He received the Sprengel Prize for Fine Art in 1985. His early compositions brought together fragments such as houses, aircraft, columns and light bulbs in arrangements that disrupted normal proportion. Their imagery has a metaphysical quality: familiar things remain recognisable but become difficult to place or explain. Later work developed more explicit figuration and organic forms. Chevalier's approach involves intuition and the possibilities of the painting process itself. Colour, outline and material handling participate in the image's development, leaving the viewer to follow relationships rather than decode a single illustration. His practice forms part of a wider European return to painting after the dominance of conceptual approaches.
