    Khoo Sui Hoe (b. 1939)

    Malaysian

Khoo Sui Hoe is a Malaysian painter born in Kedah in 1939. Educated at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, he developed a personal world of figures and landscapes that combines recognisable subjects with imaginative transformation. His images often evoke psychological spaces rather than literal places. He has also worked in printmaking, with further study at the Pratt Graphics Centre in New York.

    Biography

Khoo Sui Hoe studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1959 to 1961, learning from artists including Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng. Further study in printmaking took him to New York in 1974. Landscape and the human figure are recurring subjects. Rather than reproducing a view, he uses abstraction, altered proportions and unexpected relationships to construct an imaginative setting. This approach allows regional experience and personal memory to operate together within the image. His career connects the art worlds of Malaysia and Singapore with a wider international practice. National Gallery Singapore describes his work through its imaginary worlds and psychological atmospheres. The artist also appears in records under name variants including Sui Ho Khoo, making careful identification useful when tracing the history of individual works.
